LINO WAVES: Soundscapes of the Living Coast

Solo Artist in Residence | The Living Coast Biosphere, Sussex Digital Humanities Hub, ONCA Gallery, Fabrica | Brighton | 2024

“ONCA is delighted to showcase Lino Waves: Soundscapes of The Living Coast, an exhibition by artist Daisy Stewart-Darling in collaboration with Sussex Digital Humanities Lab, The Living Coast and Fabrica. The exhibition is a culmination of work researched and developed as part of The Living Coast Artist Residency 2024.

Over several months, Daisy Stewart-Darling collected soundscapes from various sites within the UNESCO biosphere region stretching from the chalky South Downs and Sussex coast between the River Adur at Shoreham-by-Sea and the River Ouse at Newhaven. Having worked with field recordings for four years, Daisy embraces the notion that listening is political. During the residency, this meant entering into a conversation with biodiverse ecosystems through a practice of ecological listening at various sites around The Living Coast including the chalk reef at Cuckmere Haven, Castle Hill Nature Reserve and Newhaven Port. These field recordings are presented in the exhibition to audibly transport audiences around various sites within the biosphere through a series of interactive lino prints.

The Living Coast Artist Residency invites local artists to explore the unique ecosystems and non-human inhabitants that make up our shared home by using digital tools to support public engagement. As part of the exhibition there will be a Lino Cutting Workshop with Daisy Stewart-Darling as well as a Launch Party where you can learn more about the residency.”
